Your communications team is capable.
The problem is they’re working without a foundation.

No strategic direction. No clear messaging. No systems to manage the workload. Just a talented team doing their best in an environment that wasn't built to support them — and a leader who knows something isn't working but isn't sure what to fix.

That's where I come in. I help nonprofit leaders build the communications infrastructure that lets their teams stop playing catch-up — and start advancing their mission.

IS THIS YOU?

We’re likely a good match if:

You know something isn’t working in how your organization communicates, but you’re not sure what or how to fix it.

Your communications team is capable but working without strategic direction — reactive, overstretched, and without a clear sense of what to prioritize.

Communications reports to someone without a communications background which means your team doesn’t have strategic leadership in their corner.

You want communications to be a genuine enabler of impact, not a support function.

HOW I WORK

I build the foundations — not the campaigns

I specialize in strategy, messaging, and the operational systems that make communications sustainable. I don't run campaigns or manage day-to-day execution. I build the infrastructure that makes those things possible. Every engagement starts by understanding your current reality before building anything, so what we build reflects what your organization actually needs, not a generic template.

HOW I CAN HELP

NOT SURE WHERE TO START?

The Communications Assessment

Something isn't working — you can feel it, but you can't quite name it. This is where we start. Over two weeks, I review your existing communications materials and conduct interviews with up to three people on your team. You get a written report organized around the five foundations of a strategic communications function — what's working, what's missing, and where to focus first — plus a 60-minute debrief to walk through the findings together. You can act on it immediately, with or without me.

The Communications Foundation

You know something needs to change and you're ready to build. Over three months, we create the strategic infrastructure your communications team actually needs: core messaging, a communications plan, and the operational playbooks that make the work sustainable. Everything is documented and handed off at the end — your team owns it from there.

We start with a clear-eyed look at your current reality before building anything. At the 60-day mark, we check in honestly: some organizations complete the 90 days and run with it. Others find they want ongoing strategic support.

HAVE SOMETHING IN MIND?

Specific Projects

Sometimes the need is more defined — an internal communications plan during a period of change, or messaging architecture for a new program or audience. If you have a specific challenge in mind, let's talk about whether I can help.

“Anne developed a strong understanding of our organization and needs. In just over a month, she created a clear framework to introduce more equitable and strategic decision-making into our content production process. Her approach was thoughtful and collaborative. Our team could see itself in the final product, and we felt confident in adopting the new procedures.”

WHY LEADERS CHOOSE TO WORK WITH ME

Most communications consultants come from the outside.
I spent 15 years on the inside.

I've been the person in the room building communications functions from scratch, making the case for resources to leaders, and delivering when everything was in flux. I know what it looks like when a capable communications person has no strategic direction. I know how that affects the team, the work, and eventually the organization's ability to achieve its mission.

That experience shapes how I work. I don't arrive with a framework and impose it. I start by understanding your reality — the politics, the capacity constraints, the history — before building anything. And what I build is designed for the team you actually have, not the team you wish you had.

No strategies that gather dust. No deliverables that require resources you don't have to maintain. You get a partner who understands your world because I've lived it.
